Winchendon School 2026-27 Player Profiles
Founded in 1926, the Winchendon School is a coeducational boarding and day, grades 9-12 plus post graduate, on a 326-acre campus in north-central Massachusetts 50 miles north of Worcester. Roughly 265-285 students from about 18 countries and 25 states. Average class size of eight, 6:1 student teacher ratio.
The Wapitis (a species of elk) basketball program has a long history as a college basketball feeder program. Their graduates have played at Providence (an NCAA career steals leader), Florida State (a McDonald's All-American), South Carolina, Michigan, George Washington, St. John's, Boston College, Richmond, Louisville, Yale, UConn, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Northeastern, and Trinity. NBA alumni have played for the Wizards, Mavericks, Celtics, Knicks, Rockets, and Kings, and graduates have competed in the Olympics. The team competes in the New England Prep School Athletics Council (NEPSAC) Class AA division. Last winter, they earned a top-four seed in that tournament.
Alex Popp enters his second season as the basketball team's head coach their top team. Popp brings a wealth of experience from both collegiate and prep coaching, including being the head coach of the Academic Post-Graduate team at IMG Academy (FL) and six years as head coach Vermont Academy, where he developed seven Top 100 nationally ranked players and led the team to its first-ever NEPSAC Championship in 2016. He was also voted by his coaching peers as NEPSAC Class AA Coach of the Year in 2016. Popp also has extensive collegiate experience, having worked at Holy Cross, Middlebury College, and Springfield College and has coached three NBA Champions: Malcolm Miller (Toronto), Jordan Nwora (Milwaukee), and Bruce Brown (Denver).
The Winchendon team will again vie for a seed in the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class AA division post-season tournament.

Jack Burley (2027) 6'8 power forward - A post grad from Plano, TX, Burley is a solid blend of size, motor, and productivity. His motor fuels his entire game, playing through contact, defending multiple positions, and bringing consistent physicality and effort. Burley is the type of player who's always involved, sprinting the floor in transition, crashing the glass with purpose, and rotating defensively with urgency. His activity level and willingness to do the dirty work make him a reliable presence on both ends. Video highlands PH profile
Bryson Cooper (2027) 6'8 power forward - Cooper is a blue collar forward who plays with great energy and physicality. He is a high IQ defender who can execute sophisticated coverages. He rebounds through traffic. He also runs the floor well and plays above the rim. He is the younger brother of Michigan State/Memphis Grizzlies, Carson Cooper. Plays club ball with The Family (MI).

Jayce Tre Johnson (2027) 5'9 point guard - Johnson's strengths are getting others involved, making the correct read, and being able to score the ball when needed to. Plays club ball with New York Lightning. RTB profile
Wyatt Klein (2027) 6'6 small forward - From Bishop Ireton High (VA), Klein brings intriguing versatility. With good size and a stretch-forward skill set, he has the ability to space the floor and consistently knock down open shots from beyond the three-point line. He is more than just a shooter; however, Klein shows the ability to pass and make reads within the flow of the offense, adding value as a connective piece. Lucas Lau (2027) 6’3 point guard - Lau is the son of a college coach, accordingly, he has a great basketball IQ and feel for the game. He scores at all 3 levels. He makes his teammates better and rebounds it well for a guard. Plays club ball with Bay City Warriors. PH profile
Tavin Penix (2027) 6’5 guard - #20 ranked player in New England by NE Basketball Journal. #11 ranked player in Massachusetts by NERR. Penix is a smooth operating guard who can find the bucket in a plethora of ways. He takes what the defense gives him. He is a constant threat from three and can erupt quickly from there. He has good positional size for the lead guard spot. He is active on the glass and has good vertical explosion. He also showed he can alter shots. Has received multiple D1 offers, including Marist, Iona, Le Moyne and Stonehill. Plays club ball with Syracuse Hoop Roots. PH profile
Phillip Stewart (2027) 6’3 guard - Stewart's offense is predominantly finishing around the basket, but he can also shoot the ball pretty well. Plays club ball with New York Lightning. 3.7gpa Video highlights
Alex Trombley (2027) 6’2 guard - From Liverpool, NY, 2025-26 New York AAA All State. Trombley is one of the better shooters, eg, he hit 9 threes in an AAU game against BABC—but he also does a ton of other things. He's a talented driver and has athleticism, but he's also an excellent passer who never holds the ball for too long or stalls the offense. He's extremely strong and as solid as they come. Jayson Genova (2027) 6’1 guard - From Ridgefield, CT, Genova has an extremely well-built upper body and is really impressive when driving downhill. He uses hesitation moves to get to his left hand before totally dismounting opposing players in the paint—then, once he gets to the rim, he has good athleticism and touch. But he also makes good decisions once he touches the paint. From deep, he knocks down shots and shows lots of confidence. High D3 programs will be all over him in a year or so.
