Massanutten Military Academy (VA) 2026-27 Player Profiles

Massanutten Academy is a co-ed military boarding and day school in Woodstock, Virginia, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Founded in 1899, it serves students in grades eight through twelve plus postgraduates, built around an Army JROTC leadership program. Massanutten fields two boys basketball teams: a national high school team that plays on The Grind Session circuit, and a Postgraduate Basketball Academy that competes in the top level college basketball prep Elite Prep League (EPL).

For college coaches, Massanutten’s postgrad program has one of the best track records in prep basketball. More than 80 of its players have gone on to college basketball, at schools including Gonzaga, Alabama, Virginia Tech and Kansas, and five have reached the NBA: Frank Mason III, Tyrese Martin, Dereon Seabron, Jamorko Pickett and QJ Peterson. Mason and Martin were both NBA draft picks. The program is still producing. In 2024-25 the Colonels finished third in the EPL and reached the Elite Eight of the National Prep School Championship tournament. Last season they posted the EPL’s best record at 9-1, and finished No. 23 in the national prep computer rankings.

Just as important to college coaches is who Massanutten plays. The Colonels are a perennial invitee to the National Prep Showcase each November at Albertus Magnus in New Haven, CT, which serves as the unofficial kickoff of heavyweight national prep play, and they regularly earn a bid in March to the National Prep School Championship tournament in Connecticut. In between comes a schedule full of national powers. Last season the Colonels took on IMG Academy, Sunrise Christian Academy, DME Academy, Cushing Academy, Darrow School and Vermont Academy, along with an EPL slate that included Hargrave, Western Reserve, Athletes in Action and Perkiomen. That’s what college coaches value about recruiting from top-shelf prep programs: a full year of playing with and against future college impact players, so by the time a Massanutten player arrives on campus, he’s already been tested against the best.

The postgrad team is led by head coach Curtis Peery, with assistant coach Khyre Thompson. Peery brings a college coach’s perspective to recruiting. He was a DI assistant at Maryland Eastern Shore under Frankie Allen and has also coached at the D3 level. He stresses that toughness, character, hustle and effort are often what earn a scholarship offer. Under Peery, Massanutten’s basketball players do not take part in military drills, so the focus stays on basketball, with gym sessions up to three times a day.
