IMG Academy Brings Its Fame and Its Game
Few names in prep sports carry the reach of IMG Academy. The 600-acre campus in Bradenton, Fla., across Tampa Bay from St. Petersburg, houses a boarding school for grades 6-12, a post-graduate program, and pro, collegiate and youth training.
IMG basketball is built to feel like college before players get there. The program fields teams from middle school through multiple post-grad squads. The results: the 2019 GEICO High School National Championship, 19 NBA draftees and more than 140 college placements over the past five years, 80-plus at the DI level.
The Post Grad National team is the flagship of IMG’s post grad squads. Jimmy Carr returns for his seventh season as head coach. Coach Carr spent 13 seasons at Rutgers across two stints as an assistant, with two seasons at Fairleigh Dickinson in between. He then spent five seasons under Dan Hurley at Rhode Island. At NSU University School (FL), he was 2018 Florida 5A Coach of the Year and won the 2019 5A state title with Scottie Barnes and Vernon Carey Jr. Carr has helped develop four NBA players. Associate Head Coach Dan "DT" Torres, a player development and video analytics specialist, and Julian DeBose, assistant coach, round out the staff.
As the name says, the schedule is national and unforgiving. Last season, IMG went 28-3, finished computer ranked #4 in the nation and reached the National Prep Championship Final Four in Hartford before falling to #2 Blair Academy (NJ). The team produced three All-Americans: Hakeem Weems (Georgia), Landyn Colyer (Middle Tennessee) and Trent Alston-Egbiremolen (Siena).
