IMG Academy Brings Its Fame and Game
Few names in prep sports carry the reach of IMG Academy. The 600-acre campus in Bradenton, Fla., sits about 25 miles across Tampa Bay from St. Petersburg and houses a boarding school for grades 6-12 and a post-graduate program. It also hosts youth and adult sports camps, professional and collegiate training, events and corporate retreats.
IMG basketball is built to feel like college before players get there, from the practice rhythm to the travel. The program fields teams at every level, from middle school through post-grad: Middle School, Junior Varsity, Junior National, Varsity, National and multiple post-grad squads. Director of Basketball Mike Gillian oversees the program, with Kevin Sutton as technical director and Dan Barto leading player development. The results speak for themselves: the 2019 GEICO High School National Championship, 13 McDonald's All-Americans, 19 NBA draftees, and more than 140 college placements over the past five years, 80-plus of them at the DI level.
The Post Grad National team whose players are profiled below sits at the top of that pyramid. Jimmy Carr returns for his seventh season as head coach. Before arriving in 2020, Carr spent five seasons as an assistant at Rhode Island and had three stints at Rutgers spanning a decade and a half, as an assistant and director of basketball operations. He then moved to the high school ranks, leading University School to a state title and a top-five national ranking and earning Florida 5A Coach of the Year honors in 2018. Carr has helped develop four NBA players and two McDonald's All-Americans. Dan "DT" Torres and Julian DeBose round out his staff.</p>
As the name says, the schedule is national, and it is unforgiving. Last season, they finished computer ranked as the #4 prep team in the nation. In the 2026 National Prep Championship, last held March they advanced to the Final Four before losing to then # ranked Blair Academy (NJ).
