The Phillips Family's Famous Foes: Exeter vs. Andover

Phillips Academy-Andover (MA) and Phillips Exeter Academy (NH) were founded by the same family during the Revolutionary era. Andover was established in 1778 by a Calvinist minister, Sam Phillips while Exeter was founded three years later by his Unitarian uncle, John Phillips. The academies have competed athletically since 1861, making them one of the oldest rivalries in the nation. In the early years, Andover traditionally focused on sending students to Calvinist Yale University and Exeter sent their graduates onto Unitarian Harvard.  Since then, the religious distinctions have faded for both of the academies and the universities, but both duos continue to compete for prestige and prospective students. The two academies have each held the #1 academic prep school ranking at various points during the 21st century.

The rivalry continues to get stoked annually on the basketball court, as both schools have long been feeder programs to high academic college basketball teams. They were both part of the founding membership of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) in 1942, and they both contend for a post season seed into the NEPSAC Class A championship tournament every year.

To accommodate college scout visits, both teams run a Fall Open Gym schedule, the details for which can be found here.
