The New England Independent Prep League Forms Up
The consequences of the NCAA dropping the requirement for players to have to sit out a year upon transferring colleges have been transformational and far reaching in many ways. The most obvious one has been the rise of the transfer portal becoming such a huge focus in college basketball recruiting. Many high major college coaching staffs now often pursue a philosophy that the more of older, developed and experienced players they have in their rotations, the more likely their win totals will climb in the next season.
One of the less well recognized consequences is that this has reduced the number of straight-out-of- high school graduates that are making it onto college rosters as freshmen.
High level post grad prep school programs have always been significant path for prepping for college ball and increasing one's recruiting profile. Now these programs are seeing more and more high potential applicants. More than ever, high potential high school grads are seeking a post program to give them another year of maturity, development and experience in playing at a higher, near-college level of play.
Several prep schools are responding by adding additional teams. A group of the highly respected programs have organized the New England Independent Prep League to create a high level league experience for those teams. These teams will play each other in regular season games and have a post season championship tournament each March.
